BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION
The
course provides a design student with an introduction to basic writing skills,
artist’s statements, personal manifesto, elevator pitch, design brief, and design
proposal.
DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTION
Designers as part of a
team, and artists in front of a viewer or media, must be good at communicating
their ideas convincingly. Verbal communication skills are of limited use minus
thoughtful organization of ideas. Writing helps clarify and effectively edit
raw ideas to fit common modes of communication/conversation. This course is
aimed at teaching design students these skills. The teaching strategy consists
of parallel use of two different tools
1. Learning to
write about other’s work
Students will be asked to write about works of different
designers, artists, objects and ideas to custom-fit different requirements,
like writing introduction, design brief, press release, and academic study.
2. Writing about
their own work
Design briefs, basic
proposals, need-analysis, task-analysis. All these writings require clarity of
expression because there are many people involved here. People whose needs
designer analyses, people who are to-be-collaborators and people who will
evaluate/approve these projects. The instructor will try to also help students
write for their website or for press release.
The most important
component of this course will be developing a one-liner- statement about
student’s current project, The Elevator Question, and also a
student’s Personal Manifesto.
